“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.” -Michael Jordan
Based on my experience of hiring thousands of employees and dozens of executives, there are four key things to consider when hiring startup executives. In this video, I go into some detail about these four key factors:
(1) Skills and Abilities of the Candidate. I see skills as things that candidate has learned, and abilities as things they have inherently in their personality.
(2) Domain Expertise of the Candidate. This includes both in terms of functional expertise and experience in your vertical.
(3) Team Player. Will they work well with the other members of the executive team, and with their own teams. This is not to say there will not be natural tension between team members, but everyone is playing the same game, and they are playing to WIN!
(4) Personality Fit. This includes personality fit with you as the CEO, the other members of the team, and the board of directors. The person must have a strong work ethic as well as passion and enthusiasm for what you are doing as a company. This is a startup after all.
I hope you enjoy this video. I’m very interested in hearing your opinions and experience on this topic.
